China's Chemical Raw Materials and Chemical Products Manufacturing Sector Sees 5.9% YoY Growth in May 2025

The National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBS) released data on June 16, showing that in May, the value-added output of industrial enterprises above the designated size grew by 5.8% year-on-year (YoY). Among the key sectors, mining of petroleum and natural gas rose by 5.3%, while manufacture of chemical raw materials and chemical products increased by 5.9%.
From January to May, the value-added output of industrial enterprises above the designated size expanded by 6.3% YoY. During this period, petroleum and natural gas extraction grew by 3.7%, and chemical raw materials and chemical products manufacturing surged by 8.3%.

- Alcohol, beverages, and refined tea manufacturing: +4.1%
- Textile industry: +0.6%
- Chemical raw materials and chemical products manufacturing: +5.9%
- Non-metallic mineral products: -0.6% (decline)
- Smelting and pressing of ferrous metals: +4.8%
- Smelting and pressing of non-ferrous metals: +8.1%
- General equipment manufacturing: +6.3%
- Specialized equipment manufacturing: +2.3%
- Automobile manufacturing: +11.6%
- Railway, shipbuilding, aerospace, and other transport equipment manufacturing: +14.6%

Among 623 major industrial products, 326 saw YoY growth in May. Highlights include:
- Crude steel: 127.43 million tons (+3.4%)
- Cement: 165 million tons (-8.1%)
- 10 non-ferrous metals: 6.83 million tons (+2.9%)
- Ethylene: 3.03 million tons (+14.4%)
- Automobiles: 2.642 million units (+11.3%), including 1.245 million new energy vehicles (NEVs) (+31.7%)
- Electricity generation: 737.8 billion kWh (+0.5%)
- Crude oil processing: 59.11 million tons (-1.8%)
Additional Indicators
- The sales-to-output ratio of industrial enterprises above the designated size stood at 95.9%, down 0.8 percentage points YoY.
- Export deliveries reached 1.2682 trillion yuan, up 0.6% YoY in nominal terms.
This data reflects steady industrial recovery in China, with strong performances in high-tech and green energy sectors, while traditional industries like cement and crude oil processing faced declines.
