UK And Switzerland Upgrade Free Trade Deal To Expand Services Trade

The UK government announced on July 13 that the United Kingdom and Switzerland have finalized an upgraded free trade agreement, marking a comprehensive enhancement of the existing goods trade framework. The expansion places services market access at the center of the new agreement, with the UK government estimating that the deal could generate an additional £5.2 billion in annual UK services exports to Switzerland once fully implemented.

Services remain a core pillar of the UK economy, with financial services, legal services, professional consulting, life sciences and digital industries among the country's key export sectors. Switzerland is currently the UK's sixth-largest services export market, reflecting close bilateral trade links in the sector.

The upgraded agreement introduces a series of measures designed to simplify cross-border business and professional activities. UK travelers will be able to use electronic customs clearance channels at Swiss airports, while both sides plan to remove cross-border mobile roaming charges. UK professionals will be permitted to stay in Switzerland for up to 90 days annually without a visa, and the maximum period for UK companies to send employees to Switzerland for long-term assignments will be extended to five years.

The agreement also establishes rules for the free flow of cross-border data and removes requirements in certain areas for businesses to maintain local branches, reducing operational barriers for small and medium-sized technology companies expanding internationally.

The UK government said the agreement would strengthen the country's position as a global services exporter. Major international accounting firms and London's financial sector organizations said the deal would significantly reduce regulatory friction between the two markets, creating a more favorable environment for cross-border investment and business cooperation.

The earlier UK-Switzerland free trade agreement focused primarily on goods trade, while services-related rules had notable limitations. The latest upgrade addresses these gaps by placing services provisions at the heart of bilateral economic cooperation.

The agreement must still undergo parliamentary approval in both countries before entering into force. Markets widely expect the deal to continue supporting UK services exports across regions and reinforce Britain's competitive position in Europe's high-value services sector.
