According to the latest data from China's National Bureau of Statistics, the country's caustic soda production (100% basis) reached 3.791 million metric tons (MMT) in May 2025, marking a 2.3% year-on-year (YoY) increase. Cumulative output for January-May 2025 stood at 18.697 MMT, up 4.0% YoY.
Upstream Sector
- Industrial salt production in May totaled 6.503 MMT (+18.0% YoY), with January-May output reaching 22.945 MMT (+13.4% YoY).
Downstream Sector
- Alumina: May output rose to 7.488 MMT (+5.0% YoY); January-May production hit 37.401 MMT (+9.5% YoY).
- Machine-made paper & paperboard (excluding outsourced processing): 13.715 MMT in May (+3.2% YoY), with January-May output at 65.367 MMT (+3.1% YoY).
- Fabric: May production declined to 2.67 billion meters (−3.3% YoY), though cumulative January-May output edged up 0.2% YoY to 12.63 billion meters.
- Synthetic detergents: May output remained flat at 899,000 tons (+0.0% YoY), with January-May production at 4.420 MMT (+0.4% YoY).
