In January 2026, chlorine production in Europe totaled 637,100 tonnes, representing a 12.01% year-on-year decline compared with 724,100 tonnes recorded in January 2025, according to industry production data.
Despite the annual decrease, average daily chlorine output in Europe reached 20,600 tonnes in January 2026, slightly higher than December 2025, when average daily production stood at 20,300 tonnes, indicating a modest month-on-month increase. However, the figure remained 11.97% lower than the 23,400 tonnes per day recorded in January 2025, reflecting continued pressure on regional chlorine supply.
Operating conditions across the European chlor-alkali sector also weakened during the month. In January 2026, the average operating rate of chlor-alkali production facilities was 65.5%, down from 74% in January 2025, signaling reduced capacity utilization among producers.
Meanwhile, caustic soda inventories in Europe totaled 216,000 tonnes in January 2026, declining from 229,100 tonnes in December 2025. Compared with the same period last year, inventories fell by 28,900 tonnes, down from 244,900 tonnes recorded in January 2025.
The combined decline in chlorine production, lower plant utilization rates, and reduced caustic soda inventories highlights shifting supply dynamics within the European chlor-alkali market at the start of 2026.
