Trump Wraps Historic China Visit With Xi, Sealing Key Deals

U.S. President Donald Trump concluded a two-day state visit to China on May 15, departing Beijing by air after holding a series of high-profile summits with Chinese President Xi Jinping that both sides described as historic and wide-ranging.

The visit marked the first trip by a U.S. president to China in nine years and the second in-person meeting between the two leaders since their encounter in Busan, South Korea, in October last year.

Xi, Trump Agree On New Framework For Bilateral Ties

On May 14, Xi hosted Trump at a welcoming ceremony and state banquet, followed by formal bilateral talks and a joint visit to the Temple of Heaven. The two leaders conducted an in-depth exchange of views on major issues affecting both countries and the world, reaching a series of new agreements, according to China's Foreign Ministry.

In a smaller-format meeting held at Zhongnanhai on May 15, Xi described Trump's visit as historic and landmark, noting that the two sides had jointly established a new framework defining bilateral relations as a constructive and strategically stable partnership. He emphasized that peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation between the two countries, grounded in mutual respect, reflected the shared aspirations of both peoples and the broader international community.

Trump called the visit extremely successful and said the two sides had reached a number of important agreements while resolving several outstanding issues, describing the outcomes as beneficial to both nations and the world. He spoke warmly of Xi as a longtime friend whom he holds in high regard, saying U.S.-China relations would only grow stronger, and expressed his hope to welcome the Chinese president to Washington in the future.

Business Leaders Accompany Trump, Tout China Opportunities

More than a dozen executives from prominent American companies accompanied Trump on the visit, including Apple CEO Tim Cook, Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, and Qualcomm President and CEO Cristiano Amon.

Speaking to Xinhua on the sidelines of the visit, Huang said artificial intelligence had created new opportunities for China. Amon described the Chinese economy as dynamic and full of vitality. Musk said he felt optimistic about the summit and expected it to produce positive outcomes.

Three-Year Strategic Roadmap

China's Foreign Ministry said the two leaders agreed to use the new constructive and strategically stable framework to guide the bilateral relationship over the next three years and beyond, with the goal of achieving stable, healthy, and sustainable ties that bring greater peace, prosperity, and progress to the world.

The leaders also reached significant consensus on appropriately managing each side's core concerns and agreed to strengthen communication and coordination on international and regional issues.

Beijing said the interactions between the two heads of state promoted mutual understanding, deepened trust, advanced practical cooperation, and injected much-needed stability and certainty into a turbulent global environment.
