Analysis of Europe's Chlor-Alkali Production in May 2025

In May 2025, chlorine production in Europe totaled 602,900 tons, representing a year-on-year decline of 12.05% compared to 685,500 tons in May 2024. The region's average daily chlorine output in May stood at 19,400 tons, down 4.43% from April 2025 when the daily average was 20,300 tons. Compared with May 2024, average daily production dropped by 12.22%, as the daily average in May 2024 was 22,100 tons.

The average operating rate of chlor-alkali plants in Europe was recorded at 61.2% in May 2025. This marked a decrease from April's average of 64.0%, and also a decline from the same period last year when the average utilization rate was 67.4% in May 2024.

As for caustic soda inventories, European stocks reached 189,600 tons in May 2025, up from 181,300 tons in April 2025. However, this represented a reduction of 22,400 tons compared with May 2024, when inventories stood at 212,000 tons.

Overall, Europe's chlor-alkali sector in May continued to face pressure from lower production levels and reduced plant utilization, while caustic soda inventories showed a modest month-on-month increase but remained below year-ago levels.
