Eli Lilly to Invest Over US$6 Billion in New API Manufacturing Facility in Alabama

Eli Lilly & Co. has announced plans to invest more than US$6 billion to build a new pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Huntsville, Alabama, marking a major step in its ongoing expansion of US production capacity. The project represents the third of four new domestic manufacturing sites planned under the company's broader expansion programme.

The Huntsville facility will focus on the production of next-generation synthetic active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), with an emphasis on small-molecule synthetic drugs and peptide therapeutics. Notably, the site will serve as one of the manufacturing locations for orforglipron, Eli Lilly's first oral small-molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist. The company plans to submit regulatory applications for the drug's obesity indication to global authorities by the end of this year.

The investment is expected to generate significant employment opportunities. Eli Lilly plans to create 450 high-value permanent roles in the region, including positions for engineers, scientists, operations staff and laboratory technicians. Construction of the facility is scheduled to begin in 2026 and is projected to create approximately 3,000 construction jobs, with completion anticipated in 2032.

According to estimates, the expansion of Eli Lilly's manufacturing footprint in Alabama will deliver substantial economic benefits to Huntsville. Each dollar invested by the company is expected to generate up to four dollars in local economic activity, while each manufacturing job is anticipated to support multiple additional roles across supply chain, logistics and retail sectors. The facility will integrate digital automation throughout its operations to enhance efficiency and ensure a stable supply of safe, high-quality medicines.

Earlier this year, Eli Lilly announced plans to further strengthen its US pharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities across multiple therapeutic areas. Recent disclosures include new facility developments in Texas and Virginia, as well as expansions to its existing production site in Puerto Rico. The company also indicated that an additional US manufacturing location will be announced in the coming weeks.
