U.S. Military Buildup Near Iran Raises Fears of Regional War

According to news reports, the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln was reported on January 26 to have entered the area of responsibility of U.S. Central Command in the Indian Ocean. On the same day, U.S. Central Command confirmed that the Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group was 'deploying to the Middle East', amid sharply rising regional tensions.

Iranian officials reacted with strong warnings. On January 26, the spokesperson for Iran's parliamentary National Security and Foreign Policy Committee said that if the United States launches any aggression, Iran's response 'will not be limited to U.S. military bases or equipment'. Iran's Foreign Ministry also stated that its armed forces are fully prepared to respond to any violation, pledging retaliation that would make aggressors 'regret' their actions.

Lebanon's Hezbollah echoed the warning. Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem said on January 26 that the group would not stand aside in the face of any military action against Iran, cautioning that such moves could trigger a broader regional conflict.

U.S. Military Buildup Raises Fears of Escalation

Public information shows that the Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group is led by the carrier itself, with Carrier Air Wing Nine as its core air component, accompanied by the guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay and multiple guided-missile destroyers from Destroyer Squadron 21.

Israeli sources have previously indicated that other U.S. naval assets are also operating in waters near Iran, including Arleigh Burke-class destroyers USS Mitchell and USS McFaul. Additional U.S. naval forces in the region reportedly include the amphibious command ship USS Mount Whitney and the cruise-missile nuclear submarine USS Georgia.

U.S. air assets have also been moving into the Middle East. Data from the flight-tracking website Flightradar24 show that in recent days at least three U.S. Air Force aircraft were redeployed from Germany to Middle Eastern countries, including Kuwait and Qatar. Reports indicate that squadrons of F-35A, F-15E and F-16 fighter jets, P-8A maritime patrol aircraft, MQ-9 drones and KC-135 aerial refueling aircraft are already in place.

On January 25, the U.S. Air Force announced that it would conduct a multi-day readiness exercise in the Middle East to demonstrate its ability to deploy and sustain air combat power in the region. There have also been reports that, in anticipation of possible Iranian attacks, the United States is sending additional Patriot air defense systems and THAAD missile defense systems to the Middle East.

Iran Declares Highest Level of Readiness

In response to what it describes as escalating pressure from the United States, Iran has said it has entered its highest level of combat readiness. On January 26, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani Baghaei said Iran is more prepared than ever and will fully respond to any aggression, delivering a response that would make aggressors 'regret' their actions.

Baghaei stressed that regional countries are well aware that insecurity is 'contagious' and that instability would not be confined to Iran alone. He reiterated that claims Iran is seeking nuclear weapons are unfounded, stating that Iran has never sought and will never seek such weapons.

He added that Iran does not welcome war and does not avoid diplomacy or negotiations, accusing the United States, in coordination with Israel, of 'overturning and setting fire to the negotiating table'. According to Baghaei, Iran has taken 'all possible diplomatic measures', engaging with regional and external parties, but warned that if war is imposed on Iran, it will have no choice but to resist and 'fully defend the nation's fundamentals and survival'. Analysts have suggested that potential Iranian countermeasures could include blocking the Strait of Hormuz.

Hezbollah Warns of Regional Fallout

Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem said any war against Iran could 'ignite the entire region', reaffirming the group's firm support for the Iran-led 'Axis of Resistance' against Israel. Addressing threats against Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Qassem said such rhetoric targets not only an individual but also his broad base of followers, warning that harm to Khamenei would directly threaten regional stability and Hezbollah's own security.

Reports of U.S.-Israeli Coordination Add to Tensions

Separately, sources have claimed that senior Israel Defense Forces officials recently met in Tel Aviv with visiting U.S. Central Command commander Michael Kurilla to discuss Iran and regional security. According to the sources, the U.S. side acknowledged that promoting regime change in Iran is its 'fundamental objective' and emphasized Washington's security commitments to Middle Eastern allies, including Israel. These claims have not been officially confirmed by either the United States or Israel.

The Israeli military previously said in a statement that the two sides share aligned positions on key issues and that the meeting underscored the close strategic relationship and deepening defense cooperation between Israel and the United States.

Israel on High Alert as Region Braces for Uncertainty

On January 26, Israel's Ministry of Tourism said it has drawn up contingency plans to evacuate approximately 42,000 tourists currently in the country if Israeli airspace is closed due to a potential conflict with Iran. The ministry said it has prepared detailed plans to contact tourists and organize their departure via land border crossings, adding that the measures would be activated immediately if needed.

Israeli Northern Command head Uri Gordin previously said the military is preparing for possible chain reactions triggered by U.S. military action against Iran and has entered a state of heightened alert, closely monitoring whether Hezbollah could join a wider conflict. The Israeli Central Command has also launched a pre-planned military exercise focused on improving readiness for 'extreme scenarios'.

Israel's Civil Aviation Authority has reportedly notified several foreign airlines that the country may enter a 'sensitive period' around January 30, warning that Israeli airspace could be closed if security assessments cannot ensure an acceptable safety level. The Israeli Ministry of Health said it has instructed institutions to prepare for emergencies so the healthcare system can rapidly shift into crisis mode if an attack occurs.

Regional Allies Voice Concern

The U.S. Department of Defense recently released its 2026 National Defense Strategy, emphasizing that Washington intends to have regional allies and partners shoulder what it calls the primary responsibility for 'deterring and defending against Iran', by supporting Israel's defense capabilities and deepening cooperation with Gulf Arab states.

However, recent analyses indicate that countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman are deeply concerned about possible U.S. military intervention against Iran, fearing that large-scale military action could ignite a regional powder keg and trigger cascading instability across the Middle East.
