Venezuela Oil Exports Collapse to Near Zero as US Sanctions Bite

According to a Reuters report dated 5 January, Venezuela's oil exports have fallen to nearly zero under intensified United States oil embargoes and sanctions. With domestic storage facilities approaching saturation, state-owned oil company Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) has begun cutting crude production and implementing emergency measures to shut down certain oilfields and well clusters.

The report states that US blockades on Venezuelan tanker shipments have effectively halted crude exports, resulting in a continuous buildup of oil inventories. At the same time, dwindling supplies of diluents used to blend Venezuela's heavy crude are further constraining production activities.

Reuters highlighted that although Venezuela's petroleum infrastructure has not suffered direct physical damage from recent US actions, maintaining normal operations has become extremely challenging for PDVSA amid multiple pressures, including export blockades and unresolved cyberattacks. Production cuts may trigger cascading effects on refining capacity and domestic fuel supplies, potentially worsening Venezuela's already strained economic and fiscal situation.

Reuters data shows that more than 17 million barrels of Venezuelan crude currently remain stranded at sea, unable to depart. Preliminary estimates indicate that Venezuela's crude production averaged about 1.1 million barrels per day in November last year, with exports around 950,000 barrels per day. Under tightening US sanctions, exports fell to around 500,000 barrels per day in December.

On 3 January, US President Donald Trump stated that major US oil companies would be heading to Venezuela. He said these corporations would invest billions of dollars to repair Venezuela's severely deteriorated oil infrastructure and begin generating revenue for the United States.
